Fairly frequent in woods and scrub and by rivers and coastal cliffs. A bush or small tree up to 10 m high. Leaves 5-10 cm long, female catkins 3-7 cm ID: Leaves less than twice as long as broad, grey with a dense covering of short hairs below. Young twigs downy in spring and summer. Leaves strongly veined below but not wrinkled above like S Aurita. Other features: Catkins flower Mar-Apr, borne on short stalks along the twigs with a few small leaf-like bracts at the base. Frequenntly hybridises with Grey Willow and many specimens show some introgression. |
