Only occurs in one locality; there abundant. Habitat includes road verge, burn edge and moorland. Height c 30-70 cm Skye ID: The branches on the lower half of the stem have their first internode much shorter than the stem sheath. Branches in regular whorls of between 10 and 20 on most plants, many of the branches having 5 angles or ribs. Branches not drooping. Main stem has pronounced grooves and ridges down its length, easily felt to the touch. Main stem pale green. Other features: Intermediate between the parents, Marsh Horsetail and Great Horsetail. Cones are on the green stems in Spring as in Marsh H, not on special brown stems as in Great H. Spores are produced but are sterile. |
