Frequent in alkaline flushes on moorland or by the coast.

Stem short, typically 5-10 cm high.  Spikelet c 5-7 mm long.

ID: Like the other spike-rushes it has a solitary spikelet at the tip of a leafless and bractless stem.  Distinguishing feature is that the lowest glume is more than half as long as the entire spikelet.

Other features: Spikelet has 3-7 flowers, the other 3 spike-rushes have over 10.  As in the other species, there are a series of sheaths without leaves up the lower part of the stem, the topmost of which is cut at an angle to the horizontal of usually around 10-30 in this species.  Lower sheaths pale brown.  Stigmas 2.
